Autumn Hair Care: How To Look After Your Hair This Season

With the sun setting on the summer, it might be time to start thinking about your autumn hair care routine. We know what you’re thinking and yes, you really do need to switch up your routine as the seasons change! In order to keep your hair in the best condition possible, adjustments need to be made. Fortunately, there’s no need to worry about figuring out what to do because we’ve got you covered. Here are our top tips for the perfect autumn hair.

Autumn Hair Care

Autumn Hair Care Step 1: Amp Up The Moisture

There’s nothing like cold air to suck the life out of your hair, making it not only dry, but frizzy too. We all know that the drier your hair is, the more prone to breakage it is, so keeping your hair hydrated is key. One way to do this is to switch to a shampoo and conditioner specially formulated for dry hair during the colder months of the year.

For even more moisture, you could consider adding hair oil into the mix as well. Using hair oil sparingly can work wonders for your hair and lock in moisture.

There are two ways to go about using oils. For a quick boost, you could add a few drops to the ends of your hair after washing it, or you could take it to the next level. Massaging oil into your scalp, working it through the rest of your hair and leaving it overnight before washing it will give you intensely hydrated hair. There are loads of oils you could turn to: coconut, argan, almond or caster to name but a few. These oils will also target a dry scalp, if that’s something you suffer from.

Autumn Hair Care Step 2: Focus On Your Scalp

More often than not, we’re so concerned about our hair, we forget about our scalp! As we reach the chillier months of the year, our scalp has a tendency to become dry and irritated. This is due to a number of factors but the cold weather is most likely to be the main culprit. A change in diet and chronic conditions like eczema may also be to blame. If you can help it, keeping your scalp hydrated is really beneficial for your hair as a dry scalp can also lead to hair loss.

Oils aren’t the only way to treat your scalp. Clarifying shampoo and scalp scrubs can really work their magic on dandruff. Using these products on a regular basis (at least once a week) can stop dandruff in its tracks and keep your scalp fresh until the first signs of spring. Paying attention to your hairbrush is also important. Using a paddle brush is great for massaging the scalp and will also be gentle on your hair too. If you want to know which brush is best for you, check out one of our latest blog posts to find out more.

Autumn Hair Care Step 3: Time For A Haircut?

As we mentioned earlier, dry hair is a much more common occurrence in autumn and winter. A mix of central heating and changes in the weather can negatively affect your hair, making it more prone to damage. If your hair is already damaged, it’s only going to make matters worse. It’s best to target things such as split ends when you first see them cropping up.

If left untreated, split ends will work their way up the affected strands of hair until they eventually snap. The only way to treat them is to get rid! Booking an appointment with your hairdresser when you start to see falling leaves is the best way to ensure your tresses won’t end up looking dull and lacklustre.

Hair Myths

Hair Myths That Need The Chop

How many times did your mum encourage you to finish your sandwich by telling you that your hair would become curly if you ate all your crusts?

It’s been a couple of decades now and we can say with absolute certainty that our hair is no curlier than it would’ve been had we not hoovered up our crusts. Curl cream and a diffuser go much further than crusts – sorry, mum!

Over the years, we’ve all been given more tips and tricks than we can shake a stick at when it comes to our hair. However, many of us have come to realise that some of them are more fiction than fact! That’s why we’re here to debunk some common hair myths to save you some time and energy when it comes to looking after your tresses.

Hair Myths And Facts

Hair Myths: Haircuts Make Your Hair Grow Quicker

This is probably the most common myth out there when it comes to hair. Getting your hair cut on a regular basis will definitely keep your locks healthy, but it won’t make them grow any faster!

Here’s the thing about hair, it grows from roots near the very bottom of the hair follicle. These roots are made up of proteins and receive nourishment from the blood vessels in our scalp. This creates more cells that result in hair growth.

When new cells are created, hair gets pushed further and further up until it moves past the scalp. Along the way, your new hair passes oil glands that will facilitate its growth. These same glands can also make your hair greasy, but more on that later.

As our hair is all technically ‘dead’ anyway, a haircut definitely can’t do any harm. In fact, a haircut is a great idea, especially if your hair is a little damaged. It’ll stop split ends from spreading further and breaking even higher. So, if longer locks are a priority, you’ll need to give your hairdresser a ring.

Hair Myths: Cold Water Makes Your Hair Shinier

This is a myth we all need to stop believing – a blast of cold water at the end of a shower does nothing except make us uncomfortable!

What’s the logic here then? Well, it was once thought that cold water closes the cuticle, which is the protective coating on the outside of the hair shaft. A closed cuticle is a flat cuticle, meaning, in theory, that it should be able to reflect more light and therefore make your hair shinier.

As we mentioned earlier, our hair isn’t technically alive so it won’t really react to water temperature. It can still react to the products we use though. Because of this, you should still rinse whatever products you choose to use with warm water in order to get the most out of them (in every sense). If you’re thinking about using incredibly hot water on your hair… please don’t. As we all know, too much heat is always a bad thing.

Our scalp, on the other hand, does react to temperatures, with cold water having an adverse effect on this part of the head. When you rinse with cold water, the capillaries in your scalp constrict, which means the vital nutrients your hair needs to grow might not be able to make their way down to the hair bulb. Long story short, skip the change of temperature to keep your hair and scalp healthy!

Hair Myths: You Shouldn’t Use Conditioner If You Have Greasy Hair

See, we told you we’d get back to everyone’s least favourite eventuality! Contrary to popular belief, greasy hair doesn’t come about as a result of conditioners, so avoiding this product won’t necessarily do you any good.

In fact, greasy hair is actually down to the scalp’s production of sebum, a perfectly natural process that moisturises this area and balances its pH. Unfortunately, too much of this substance can make your hair look shiny… and not in a good way.

Here’s the annoying bit: washing your hair too often to combat greasiness can make the situation a whole lot worse. That’s because our scalp is just like the skin on our faces in the sense that washing it more often can make it even oiler. When our natural oils are stripped away, our scalp panics and tries to make up for the lack of oil by producing more to try and compensate. This sends our oil production into overdrive.

Finding the balance between too much and not enough is tricky but it’s important to pay attention to your hair and how it reacts to what you do. A little natural oil is perfectly normal but you might find that your hair still feels greasy to the touch the day after you wash it.  If you’re really struggling, stick to conditioning the lengths of your hair as they’re probably drier anyway. This is because the ends of your hair get more damaged over time, drying them out and making them more porous than the rest.

How We Can Help

Sometimes, there’s no harm in faking it until you make it. So, if you want to make your hair seem fuller and healthier, our extensions could be perfect for you. After all, there’s only so much you can do on your own.

At Flip-In Hair, we can help you create any style you like, and if it’s length and volume you’re after, we’ve got you covered. Make sure you check out our colour match service so your hair can stay as seamless as possible.

Favourite Hairstyles

Our Top Tips And Favourite Hairstyles This Festival Season

As you may have heard… festival season is back on the cards and we couldn’t be more excited! It’s been a little while now since we pulled our wellies out of the shed or Googled ‘how to put up a tent’, and we can’t wait to get started. But, in between reminding ourselves about the outdoors essentials, who amongst us has thought about their Favourite Hairstyles?

After all, you can’t forget about nailing that all-encompassing festival look, not this year at least!

So, if you haven’t splashed out on the fancy showers and the hairdryers, those of you sleeping in a tent will need some help keeping your hair fresh. That’s why we’re going to share our top tips for ensuring that your hair remains looking fabulous this festival season, with a few go-to favourite hairstyles thrown in for good measure. Let’s get started!

Favourite Hairstyles Flip-In Hair

The Last Shower…

Make the most of your last shower before you head out on the open road or jump on a train. You’ll definitely need to cover all bases when you’re in the cubicle, so make sure to wash and shampoo your hair before you set off.

When you condition your hair, most of the product should be applied to the lengths of your hair, not the roots. This will ensure that your hair appears shiny, not oily – we want to avoid that for as long as possible!

If you can, you should also make time for a hair mask – even if you only leave it in for ten minutes! Giving your hair a little bit of extra TLC before the exciting weekend ahead is also a good shout. If you have any hydrating products, now is the time to embrace them. Using a light leave-in conditioner will be sure to cushion the blow should you cause any damage to your tresses.

Step Away From The Other Products!

We need to draw the line at leave-in conditioner for now. The other products you would normally use at this point will do you more harm than good at a festival! Mousse, hairspray, serum and pretty much anything else you can think of will weigh your hair down and make it look greasy much quicker. We know it can be tempting but it’s for your own good!

‘What about dry shampoo?’, we hear you ask. Dry shampoo is an absolute godsend when it comes to festivals but it works best when your hair is already dirty. It will soak up excess oil but only if there’s any there to start with! With that in mind, try to use dry shampoo when you really need to. If your hair is on the greasier side, you may need to use this sooner, but if you can, hold off until before you go to bed after the first day, or till your second morning.

Don’t forget to comb or brush (whichever you prefer) your hair regularly even though you’re bound to be distracted – you don’t want to come home with knots and split ends! Your hair is probably going to go through a lot anyway, so there’s no need to make the situation worse.

Our Favourite Hairstyles To See You Through The Weekend

The possibilities are endless when it comes to hairstyles, but we know that not all hairstyles are created equal! Before you set off, make sure you have an idea of what you want to do with your hair. This means you can spend less time thinking about styling and more time enjoying yourself. Your efforts might be in vain if the heavens open but that’s the risk we take… don’t you just love the British summertime? It might be wise to pop a waterproof jacket in your backpack for good measure.

For the first day or two, why not keep your hair down? You’ll be having so much fun, you won’t even notice it anyway. Let your hair dry naturally and maybe scrunch it a little bit to create some effortless ‘I woke up like this waves’ à la Alex Chung at Glastonbury. Your hair will most likely still look pretty good the morning after, so make the most of it! A half-up, half-down has a lot of potential at this point, don’t you think? Or you could twist the sides and pin them back, moving on to the perfect mini messy bun before you whip out your dry shampoo.

Towards the end of the weekend, braids or buns are your best friend. If you struggle with braiding your own hair, chances are your friend will help you – what else are friends for, right? Braids are perfect for disguising greasy hair so if your dry shampoo isn’t quite cutting the mustard anymore, no one will notice!

Braids can be intimidating if you’ve not attempted them before, but this handy guide is perfect for beginners. If braids aren’t your thing, try some buns! A top-knot, messy bun or space buns are our personal favorites. We know these styles aren’t revolutionary but they’re quick, easy and will leave you with plenty of time to live your best life!

When all else fails – accessorise. Throw on a hat or a bandanna, you can’t go wrong with either of them. We know they’re a bit 2009, but we’re not entirely opposed to flower crowns either, they’re still super-cute and we’ve been told they’re back! If it’s the very last day, it’s definitely not the end of the world if you decide to add some hair glitter into the mix, after all, you’ll be reunited with your shower in no time.

What About Extensions For Your Favourite Hairstyles?

There’s no reason why you can’t wear your extensions at a festival! Our extensions don’t require any clips, glue or weaving so they’re perfect when it comes to switching up your look in a flash! If you’re more of a ponytail person, don’t worry! Our ponytail extensions give you the extra length and volume you want in no time at all.

At Flip-In Hair, we can help you create virtually any style you like so if you want to add a pop of colour to elevate your favourite hairstyles this festival season – we’ve got you covered! If it’s the length and volume you’re after, we can do that too. Make sure you check out our colour match service so your hair can stay as seamless as possible, even if you’ve been out in the sun and your hair is a little lighter than usual.

Caring For Your Extensions

Caring For Your Extensions

Buying hair extensions isn’t the cheapest thing to do, which is why it’s important to take care of them to give them the longest lifespan possible. Much like if you were to buy a new pair of trainers or handbag, looking after these products is going to benefit you (and your pocket) in the long run.

Extensions Care

Why Is Caring For Your Extensions Important?

Extensions aren’t attached to your scalp, so they don’t receive constant nutrients and oil deposits in the same way as your hair does. They are chemically processed, which means they are drier and slightly coarser than your natural hair. Due to this, you’ll want to use ingredients that will replenish and add moisture to your hairpieces.

Which Ingredients Should I Avoid?

Products that contain sulfates, parabens, bleach and short-chain alcohols can damage hair extensions. These ingredients can cause your extensions to dry out! They may also be listed under names such as sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), propyl and isopropyl. Avoid using products that contain these substances.

Which Ingredients Will Benefit My Extensions?

When choosing products for your extensions you should be looking out for those that contain long-chain fatty alcohols. Products featuring coconut oil or palm oil will benefit you as they’ll draw moisture into the hair and add a smooth, slippery texture to help with detangling. Generally, these ingredients are found in conditioners and deep conditioning treatments.

Aim for Morrocan oil, argan oil or castor oil-based products. These will help to hydrate and moisten your hairpieces.

How Should I Wash My Extensions?

When it comes to washing your extensions it is important to remember that they don’t receive the same oils and nutrients as your natural hair, therefore, it’s not necessary to wash them as often as you would your own hair.

A good rule of thumb is to wash them every 30 days or when they become difficult to style as this means there’s a build-up of product!

Here are some steps to follow when washing your Flip-In Wefts

  • Brush your extensions and rid them of any tangles.
  • Shampoo each weft individually – this will help prevent tangling.
  • Condition each weft individually – leave the products to soak in for around 10 minutes.
  • Apply a deep conditioner – leave this in overnight for the best results.
  • Rinse hair thoroughly – ensure there’s no slippery texture to the hair.
  • Rinse under cold water – this will close the cuticles ensuring the moisture stays in the hair.
  • Air-dry your extensions – using heat will create frizz and could potentially damage the hair.

A Whistle-Stop Tour Of The Last 100 Years Of Hair Trends

A lot has happened in the last 100 years, times have changed and so has hair! Imagine telling a flapper girl a century ago that there would eventually be a device small enough to put into your handbag (depending on the size of your bag, of course) that could curl or straighten your hair in a matter of seconds? She’d need a lie-down!

Why don’t you take a break too? Grab a cuppa and get ready to learn about the last 100 years of hair trends

1920s – The Roaring Twenties

The roaring 20s were famous for their extravagance and rebellion! Back then, anyone who dared to call themselves a fashionable young woman wouldn’t be seen dead without a bob! This short, angular style was first met by a lot of resistance but as with most things, it was soon welcomed into the fold.

It was easy to maintain and women adored feeling liberated after chopping off their locks! If you wanted to transform your look in the 1920s, you could curl your hair using scraps of material to create tight, springy curls. Are you now thinking about how you could brush up on your heat-free styling knowledge? We’ve got you covered, check out our blog post from March!

1960s – The Swinging Sixties

Fast-forward forty years and the world had changed even more! We’d been through another World War and things were relatively normal once more. A hip new band from Liverpool called The Beatles were on the scene and absolutely everyone was trying to put together the biggest beehive possible.

Created by Margaret Vinci Held in 1960, the beehive became the most popular hairstyle of the decade and was worn by everyone, from Aretha Franklin to Audrey Hepburn. Towering hair was now the popular style and women around the world were back-combing and hair-spraying more than ever. If your hair wasn’t as high as possible in the 60s, it may have been wavy and flowing instead. Hippies were also a common sight at the time and their carefree attitude extended to their hair – they were more concerned with music than worrying about hairspray!

1970s – Fighting Crime And Keeping Time

Peace and love weren’t the words on everyone’s lips anymore but hair trends are still a very big deal. Many women were trying to recreate American actress Farrah Fawcett’s feathered hair after her rise to stardom following the television series ‘Charlie’s Angels’. Others were keeping their hair long and straight, a style popularised by Cher – who still rocks that look today! Both of these styles have stood the test of time, proving that most looks make their way back into the mainstream after a few decades away.

Hair Trends

1990s – You Gotta Get With My Friends

Skip the big, permed hair trends of the 1980s and you’ll find The Spice Girls at the top of their game a decade later. After watching Friends, everybody wanted ‘The Rachel’ and Jennifer Aniston’s iconic hairstyle soon became one of the most famous in history! Almost twenty years on, we’re still talking about it, so it seems like Jen’s stylist certainly did something right.

Hair Trends

The Present Day

As you’re probably aware, a lot has gone down in the 21st century, and we’re only 21 years in! Ross and Rachel finally decided if they were on or off and Cher is still as iconic as ever. We’ve moved on from butterfly clips and roll-on hair glitter to barrel wavers and air stylers but there’s one thing we all know – we can do anything we want to our hair.

Flip-In Hair can help you make any style you want a reality – whether it’s adding a flash of colour or simply creating the length and volume you desire.

Our wired extensions don’t require clips, glue or weaving so you can put them in and take them out in no time, allowing you to change your look even if you change your mind. Don’t forget about our colour match service so your hair can stay as seamless as possible!

OLAPLEX says “our hair contains millions of disulfide bonds. These bonds give the hair its structure, strength, and stability. It restores damaged and compromised hair by repairing it from the inside out.”

With so many steps, the range of products can seem a little daunting at first. That’s why we’ve broken them down for you:

  • OLAPLEX No.5 – Used in conjunction with No.4, OLAPLEX No.5 restores, repairs and hydrates without adding excess weight to the hair.
  • OLAPLEX No.6 – No.6 is a highly concentrated leave-in smoothing cream, which prevents frizz and flyaways – perfect for all hair types!
  • OLAPLEX No.7 – An ultra-lightweight, reparative styling oil that dramatically increases shine, adds softness and strength and enhances all hair types and textures.

Whether the damage is thermal, mechanical or chemical, OLAPLEX has a product to rebuild the bonds in your hair and bring it right back to health.

Does It Really Work?

Take it from the celebs, OLAPLEX is a miracle worker when it comes to revitalising damaged hair. Drew Barrymore herself raved about the amazing results she saw after using it just once.

“It’s amazing how much your hair changes over the course of your life—it just doesn’t bounce back the same way. But this strengthens my hair in one wash. It’s amazing.”

Sun Damaged Hair

What You Can Do To Avoid Sun-Damaged Hair

The gradual easing of restrictions, no longer needing to wrap up warm, a potential return to – whisper it – life as we know it?

Whilst there’s much to be celebrated as we move into spring, one thing that we do need to be mindful of is the impact that the sun can have on our hair. Heat styling isn’t the only thing capable of frazzling our gorgeous locks, you know!

How Can The Sun Damage Our Hair?

Even though most people are aware of the dangers of sun-damaged skin, considerably less are in the know about what the sun can do to our hair. In fact, when we spend too much time basking in its glory, we may experience discolouration, brittleness, bleaching and an increase in split ends. Hair that has fallen victim to sun damage will also become almost impossible to manage – and most commonly affects those blessed with fairer or lighter hair colours.

Why Does Sun Damage Occur?

Sun-damaged hair occurs because of how the sun’s rays react with a natural substance known as melanin. When strands of hair are exposed to heat, they can change colour, lose elasticity and become weaker in structure. All of this can set the stage for lasting damage, sunburn and a big ol’ dip in confidence.

Sun Damaged Hair

What You Can Do To Avoid Sun-Damaged Hair

Fortunately, there are many precautions you can take to reduce your risk of sun damage. Here are some of our favourites!

  • Suitable headwear: Before we even get into products that we recommend to protect your hair and scalp, the first thing we’d advise you to do is to wear a hat whenever you go outside. This is similar to why you would wear clothes that cover your skin when you know you’re going to come into contact with the sun. Hats not your thing? Try using a headscarf or umbrella instead.
  • Proactive haircare: All good hair care starts in the shower, so make sure you invest in a decent conditioner or pre-conditioning shampoo to get the ball rolling. Using these sorts of protective products will give your hair a fighting chance against the sun’s rays and also boost its moisture levels at the same time. As the warmer weather can increase the rate at which we sweat, these moisturising products are especially important to use during the spring and summer.
  • Use an SPF on your hair: SPF products (think sunscreens, sunblocks etc.) aren’t just useful for the skin, and many of these can help protect your hair from seasonal sun damage. Here, our advice is to apply these products just before you go outside, paying extra attention to the tips of your hair as these are most at risk of harm. Because some SPF formulas can make your hair extensions greasy, it is always best to apply them to these parts of the hair in moderation. If this proves to be a problem, it might be worth changing up your look altogether. Ponytail, anyone?
  • Be mindful of swimming: This last one might be tempting fate a little, but exposing your hair to the chlorinated water found in swimming pools (both here and abroad) can weaken its defences against the sun. To stop this from happening, wear a swimming cap or keep your hair out of the water altogether by tying it up. Harmful chlorine should also be rinsed away by showering after you leave the pool.

As we’re all well aware, the 90s are back and Britney’s iconic pigtails are making the rounds this year. Put together a more modern version of this classic with the half-up/half-down style. Split the top sections in two, preferably using a middle parting, and easily create your pigtails! For an extra pop of colour use Flip-In Flash.

Using a thin comb, slick your hair back into a ponytail. Remember to deploy the hairspray and gel to ensure it’s sleek and secure, using a cute scrunchie, simple hairband or hair grips to create some loops, add volume and secure the updo.

We hope you find the perfect style for your hair this Valentine’s and slay all day!
