Protect Hair From Sun

How To Protect Hair From Sun Damage

We all know that we need to keep our hair safe from heat damage when we’re styling it, but how can we protect hair from sun damage this summer? Wearing SPF on your skin when you’re venturing out is essential and so is taking the appropriate steps to safeguard your hair from the sun.

Many of us spend our money on regular haircuts, shampoos, conditioners and masks to try and keep our hair as healthy as possible. Sadly, however, some of our favourite summer activities are the absolute worst when it comes to undoing all of our hard work. Stick with us to see what you can do to keep your hair strong and healthy this season.

Protect Hair From Sun Damage

What Will The Sun Do To My Hair?

Exposure to the sun’s rays can wreak havoc on your hair if you don’t have adequate protection. Your skin isn’t the only thing that can burn, your hair can too. Have you ever noticed that your hair feels particularly dry and brittle in the summer? That’s because UV rays damage the hair cuticle, your hair’s outermost layer.

Too much sun exposure can also harm your scalp, which can become sensitive and burn. Even though we have hair covering our heads, for the most part, that doesn’t mean the scalp is impervious to sun damage.

But What Can I Do To Protect Hair From Sun?

The easiest thing you can do to combat the sun is pop on a hat! Find a style that suits you (and your outfit, of course) and rock that hat all summer long, especially during peak sun hours (11am – 3pm).

You could also get your hands on an SPF oil or spray for your hair. There are several products on the market, so there’s a very high chance you’ll be able to find one from a brand you know and love to see you through the warmer months.

For those with coloured hair, knowing how to protect hair from sun damage should be particularly high on your list. The sun is notorious for altering the colour of your hair but it can’t do that without damaging it in some way. If you have blonde hair and want to lock in your colour for longer, saving yourself some money in the long run, it’s a good idea to invest in some purple shampoo. This will counteract the effects of oxidation by neutralising yellow tones.  Even if you don’t have blonde hair, you can still use purple shampoo to tone down any brassiness.

You Don’t Need To Stay Away From The Water But…

Chlorine and salt water aren’t your hair’s best friends either. When going swimming, make sure you wet your hair before you jump in. Yes, you’re probably going to get it wet anyway but your hair is like a sponge, it soaks up water. If your hair’s already wet by the time you get into the pool, it won’t be able to soak up as much chlorinated water. Chlorine is vital to keeping pools clean but will strip the natural oils from your hair, making it dry and brittle. You could even wear a swimming cap. We know it’s not everyone’s style but this could reduce any chances of damage!

Still worried about water seeping into your hair? You could apply a bit of coconut oil before you enter the pool. The oil will repel moisture and stop your hair from absorbing it should it find a way in.

Salt water strips your hair too, making it dehydrated and frizzy. You should be extra careful if your hair has been coloured recently or it could end up looking dull after a swim in the sea. Though it may not always be possible, wetting your hair before a trip to the seaside is definitely advised.

Wherever you’re swimming – make sure you wash your hair as soon as you can. Applying a hydrating mask or using a leave-in conditioner to replenish your locks is the best course of action following any exposure to salt water or chlorine.

What is OLAPLEX

What Is OLAPLEX And Why Should You Be Using It?

OLAPLEX is used by many people to help permanently repair damaged hair from the inside out. With its patented single-ingredient, bis-aminopropyl diglycol dimaleate, it is a one-of-a-kind product that works to restore the broken bonds in your hair.

How Does It Work?

This hair-strengthening treatment re-builds the bonds within the hair that are affected by colour treatments, heat damage, sun exposure and so much more.

OLAPLEX says “our hair contains millions of disulfide bonds. These bonds give the hair its structure, strength, and stability. It restores damaged and compromised hair by repairing it from the inside out.”

With so many steps, the range of products can seem a little daunting at first. That’s why we’ve broken them down for you:

  • OLAPLEX No.0 – The newest arrival in the collection primes hair for deeper repair with the highest dose of OLAPLEX technology. Use this as a two-part system alongside No.3 for best results.
  • OLAPLEX No.1 & No. 2 – These are exclusive to professionals and only for salon use.
  • OLAPLEX No.3 – This is the product that put it on the map. No.3 is an at-home treatment that visibly reduces breakage and strengthens damaged hair.
  • OLAPLEX No.4 – No.4 addresses everyday stresses such as damage, split ends and unwanted frizz. Use a regular shampoo to refresh your hair as well as repair it.
  • OLAPLEX No.5 – Used in conjunction with No.4, OLAPLEX No.5 restores, repairs and hydrates without adding excess weight to the hair.
  • OLAPLEX No.6 – No.6 is a highly concentrated leave-in smoothing cream, which prevents frizz and flyaways – perfect for all hair types!
  • OLAPLEX No.7 – An ultra-lightweight, reparative styling oil that dramatically increases shine, adds softness and strength and enhances all hair types and textures.

How Can It Help My Hair?

We’re all guilty of not using heat protection when we’re in a rush, or not looking after our colour-treated hair as well as we could do. This product is here to save us from our own laziness. Whether the damage is thermal, mechanical or chemical, OLAPLEX has a product to rebuild the bonds in your hair and bring it right back to health.

Does It Really Work?

Take it from the celebs, OLAPLEX is a miracle worker when it comes to revitalising damaged hair. Drew Barrymore herself raved about the amazing results she saw after using it just once.

“It’s amazing how much your hair changes over the course of your life—it just doesn’t bounce back the same way. But this strengthens my hair in one wash. It’s amazing.”

Sun Damaged Hair

What You Can Do To Avoid Sun-Damaged Hair

The gradual easing of restrictions, no longer needing to wrap up warm, a potential return to – whisper it – life as we know it?

Whilst there’s much to be celebrated as we move into spring, one thing that we do need to be mindful of is the impact that the sun can have on our hair. Heat styling isn’t the only thing capable of frazzling our gorgeous locks, you know!

How Can The Sun Damage Our Hair?

Even though most people are aware of the dangers of sun-damaged skin, considerably less are in the know about what the sun can do to our hair. In fact, when we spend too much time basking in its glory, we may experience discolouration, brittleness, bleaching and an increase in split ends. Hair that has fallen victim to sun damage will also become almost impossible to manage – and most commonly affects those blessed with fairer or lighter hair colours.

Why Does Sun Damage Occur?

Sun-damaged hair occurs because of how the sun’s rays react with a natural substance known as melanin. When strands of hair are exposed to heat, they can change colour, lose elasticity and become weaker in structure. All of this can set the stage for lasting damage, sunburn and a big ol’ dip in confidence.

Sun Damaged Hair

What You Can Do To Avoid Sun-Damaged Hair

Fortunately, there are many precautions you can take to reduce your risk of sun damage. Here are some of our favourites!

  • Suitable headwear: Before we even get into products that we recommend to protect your hair and scalp, the first thing we’d advise you to do is to wear a hat whenever you go outside. This is similar to why you would wear clothes that cover your skin when you know you’re going to come into contact with the sun. Hats not your thing? Try using a headscarf or umbrella instead.
  • Proactive haircare: All good hair care starts in the shower, so make sure you invest in a decent conditioner or pre-conditioning shampoo to get the ball rolling. Using these sorts of protective products will give your hair a fighting chance against the sun’s rays and also boost its moisture levels at the same time. As the warmer weather can increase the rate at which we sweat, these moisturising products are especially important to use during the spring and summer.
  • Use an SPF on your hair: SPF products (think sunscreens, sunblocks etc.) aren’t just useful for the skin, and many of these can help protect your hair from seasonal sun damage. Here, our advice is to apply these products just before you go outside, paying extra attention to the tips of your hair as these are most at risk of harm. Because some SPF formulas can make your hair extensions greasy, it is always best to apply them to these parts of the hair in moderation. If this proves to be a problem, it might be worth changing up your look altogether. Ponytail, anyone?
  • Be mindful of swimming: This last one might be tempting fate a little, but exposing your hair to the chlorinated water found in swimming pools (both here and abroad) can weaken its defences against the sun. To stop this from happening, wear a swimming cap or keep your hair out of the water altogether by tying it up. Harmful chlorine should also be rinsed away by showering after you leave the pool.
