How To Avoid Winter Hair Damage

Even though 2021 started in a less than conventional manner, we guarantee that one thing has remained constant as of late: winter hair damage.

And whether this has taken on the form of split ends, dry patches or brittleness, we know that combatting this unfortunate seasonal side effect can seem like a never-ending struggle.

But, before you declare all-out war on your winter-damaged hair, you’re in luck.

Keep reading to find out how best to deal with this common concern and keep your cool ahead of that next big date night or job interview – even if these end up unfolding over Zoom!

Switch off the straighteners (and those other appliances!)

Although heat-styling is an important part of many a morning hair routine, why waste precious minutes using straighteners, curling irons and hair dryers when you’re only going to be sitting in your pyjamas all day anyway?

As such appliances can contribute to damaged hair and dry out the scalp, it’s best to leave these tasks for those special occasions, such as making that all-important trip to the shops. We’d also advise that you let your hair dry of its own accord where possible too, as this is the most effective way of protecting it from heat-induced dryness.

Extra tip: Opt for a style that requires zero input from heat-styling tools. Ponytails, buns and braids are but a few workable examples. Here are some more.

Use key products

Hair of any type, be it curly, coiled, natural or something else entirely, is equally in danger of suffering from winter damage.

Therefore one of the easiest ways to restore some moisture to your recently famished locks is to use an oil-based moisturiser at regular intervals throughout the day. This should be applied in partnership with your go-to shampoo and conditioner for best results.

If “hat hair” has become a bit of a problem, many experts suggest using an oil-based moisturiser on your hair just before you wrap up to brave the great outdoors. Another good tip is to carry a leave-in conditioner with you at all times as this will help to smooth out any static or kinks when you reach your destination.

Take control of your shower routine

Tempting though it may be to up the temperature of your shower, this can spell bad news for your hair. Washing your hair in water that is too hot can lead to breakages and further damage, whilst also stripping it of moisture. This can be avoided by showering in lukewarm water and limiting your time in the cubicle to no more than 10 minutes.

Whilst we’re on the subject of hair washing, it might also be a good idea to switch up your shampoo. And this is particularly important if your scalp has become itchier over winter. Swap your regular shampoo for one with a more gentle formula – this will help to combat a dry, flaky scalp and soothe any discomfort you may be experiencing as a result.
